(WWJ) After metro Detroit missed out on a white Christmas, it looks like we're in for a white New Year's Day.
AccuWeather says a winter storm is the way to Southeast Michigan on Saturday... anywhere from just a couple of inches to half-a-foot, depending on where you live.
AccuWeather Meteorologist Matt Benz says drizzle and rain Saturday morning will begin freezing and mixing with snow and the changing over to all snow later in the afternoon as temperatures drop into the 30s.
The snow is then expected to continue to to fall Saturday night, with the bulk of snowfall coming overnight Saturday into early Sunday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, in effect for all of metro Detroit from 7 p.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. Sunday.
Benz said most of the metro Detroit area is expected to see up to 3 inches or so of snow accumulation, while suburbs to the north and west of the city could see as much as 6 inches pile up before it's all over.
The Weather Service says this storm system is expected to cause travel disruptions across the Southeast Michigan region. Along with treacherous road conditions, decreased visibilities are expected. Drivers are urged to plan ahead to allow more time to get where they're going. "Be careful! Roads are expected to become snow-covered and slippery," Benz warned.
Something else to keep in mind: If you're thinking about building a snowman or sledding on Sunday, you'll want to bundle up.
After a high of around 40 on Saturday, Sunday will be a colder and blustery day, Benz said. The high on Sunday will only reach around 30, headed into a seasonably cold week with highs ranging from the mid- 20s to the mid-30s each day.
