Toledo woman killed, Ann Arbor teen injured after semi truck slams into vehicle on U.S. 23 in Washtenaw County

WASHTENAW COUNTY (WWJ) - One woman is dead and a teen girl is hospitalized after their vehicle was rear-ended by a semi truck on US-23 in on WedWashtenaw Countynesday evening.

Lt. Rene Gonzalez with Michigan State Police confirmed with WWJ that a 26-year-old woman from Toledo was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash which occurred around 7 p.m. on northbound US-23 near Geddes Road.


A 16-year-old female passenger from Ann Arbor had to be extracted from the wreckage, Gonzales added, and was transported to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital for further medical care.

Her condition remains unknown at this time.

Troopers along with MSP's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and Ann Arbor Township Fire Department all responded to the crash.

According to troopers, a semitruck was traveling behind the vehicle driven by the 26-year-old Toledo woman when she slowed down. The truck driver, identified as a 29-year-old man from Jackson, was unable to stop in time and rammed into the back of the car, causing them both to crash into a ditch.

The freeway was closed for several hours as crash investigators processed the scene. The section was reopened to traffic around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
