OAKLAND TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A 61-year-old man is dead after police say the SUV he was driving crossed the centerline and collided head-on with another vehicle in Oakland Township, police said on Friday.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, the fatal crash occurred on Thursday, Jan. 26, around 6:15 p.m. along Adams Road near Addison Circle South.
Based on a preliminary investigation, authorities said the 61-year-old Oakland Township man was behind the wheel of a 2000 Subaru Outback headed north on Adams Road when he crossed over into the southbound lane.
His vehicle struck a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 30-year-old Oakland Township man head-on.
"The driver of the Subaru was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene," deputies said. "He is not being identified pending notification of next of kin."
The driver of the Equinox was wearing a seatbelt, authorities added, and was rushed to a local hospital where he is said to be in serious, but stable condition.
It remains unclear why the driver of the Subaru cross the centerline, and authorities said it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the fatal crash.
An autopsy is scheduled for the 61-year-old man as the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate.
