DETROIT (WWJ) A crash in a construction zone on Detroit's northwest side leaves a man dead and another in critical condition.

Michigan State Police (MSP) said it happened on Sunday, April 19th, around 7:45 a.m. on the southbound Lodge near Wyoming.

“This is a sad reminder of the dangers of excessive speed on our roadways.” said First Lieutenant Mike Shaw.

According to MSP, a construction zone occupied the left and middle lanes. A construction vehicle blocked the left lane, as workers set up cones in the road. The workers noticed a car speeding in the left lane. The driver slammed into the back of the construction vehicle.

First responders pronounced the 23-year-old man driving the car dead at the scene. They rushed a 30-year-old Southfield man, the passenger, to the hospital. He's listed in critical condition.

Authorities closed the freeway for investigation, but have since reopened it.

The man's name was not released.

“As National Work Zone Awareness Week kicks off tomorrow, we want to remind all drivers to slow down, move over and use the zipper merge to safely enter the zone," Shaw said. "We know these safe actions will save lives of not only our construction workers, but our motorists as well.”
