PORT HURON (WWJ) -- Just over 1 ton of marijuana coming in from Canada was seized by border officials at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron.

Upon suspicions, Border Protection officers performed a second examination on a trailer of a commercial inbound shipment heading to Columbus, Ohio on Thursday evening.

During the inspection, officials said the officers found 15 wooden crated filled with approximately 2,027 pounds of marijuana inside the trailer.

"Men and women of Customs Border Protection are committed to keeping illicit substances out of communities, and they will continue to target any suspect shipments," said Port Director Michael Fox.

The Detroit field office, which covers all ports of entry throughout Michigan, have experienced a surge in contraband, since travel restrictions due to the pandemic were implemented back in March 2020.
