(WWJ) A piping hot weekend on the way means many Michiganders will be headed to the beach.

But you'll want to steer clear of these 10 sandy spots — including several in metro Detroit — which are closed after testing found unacceptably high levels of e. coli bacteria.

The following closures were announced by EGLE, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy (**updated Friday morning):

Handsome Lake - Crossroads For Youth - Oakland County

Wixom Lake - Wixom Waters - Midland County

Pontiac Lake - Pontiac Recreation Area - Oakland County

Crooked Lake - Independence Oaks County Park - Oakland County

Lake Callis - Lake Callis - Genesee County

Lake Isabella - Essex Rd - Isabella County

Lake St. Clair - St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach - Macomb County

Kent Lake - Kensington - Maple beach - Oakland County

Rowe Lake - Jacksina Subdivision - Oakland County

Crystal Lake - Beulah Beach - Benzie County

Storm water runoff is typically the reason for bacteria-related beach closures, although droppings left by geese and other wildlife has also been noted as a source.

All of these closures are effective immediately and remain in effect until follow-up tests show bacteria levels are safe.

While the beaches are closed to swimming, other forms of recreation that do not involve body contact with the water, such as fishing, are allowed where usually permitted.
