(WWJ) — A 12-year-old is in trouble with the law after allegedly being caught with marijuana and a shotgun while taking his parents’ SUV for a joyride in Mid-Michigan.

It all unfolded around 4 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, when Clare County Central Dispatch got a call from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office telling them to be on the lookout for a red Chevy Blazer, according to a report from 9&10 News.

Officials said the SUV had been reported to have been taken by the owner’s 12-year-old son.

Clare County Sheriff’s deputies found the stolen Blazer on southbound US-127 near US-10 in Grant Township, according to the report.

They pulled the SUV over and apprehended the underage driver, who was alone in the SUV.

When deputies searched the SUV, they found a 12-gauge pump shotgun and numerous shotgun shells, as well as “a small amount of marijuana,” according to the report.

The boy was taken to the Clare County Sheriff’s Office, where he was held until his parents picked him up.

Authorities did not say how far the boy had driven the SUV, though Grand Traverse and Clare Counties do not border each other.

The sheriff’s office submitted a warrant request for charges of the use of a motor vehicle without authority but without intent to steal (joy riding), operating a motor vehicle without a license, carrying a concealed weapon and for a minor in possession of marijuana.
