LEROY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A crash near Lansing killed one child on a bicycle and left his sister severely injured, according to Michigan State Police (MSP).
MSP said the crash happened on Saturday, September 5, at approximately 11:35 a.m., on Grand River near N. Meech Road, in Leroy Township.
According to MSP, a driver in a Ford Explorer SUV was driving west on Grand River when she struck the two children riding their bicycles along the shoulder.
A 12-year-old Williamston boy died from his injuries at the scene. First responders rushed his 13-year-old sister to the hospital, with "life-threatening injuries."
MSP said the driver of the Ford Explorer, a 64-year-old Williamston woman, was not using drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash. She was not hurt.
Authorities said the kids were wearing helmets.
MSP reminded all drivers to give bicyclists at least three feet of space when passing them, to stay alert, and slow down.
"A tragedy like this is a heartbreaking reminder that we all have a responsibility when we get behind the wheel," Fifth District PIO Lieutenant DuWayne Robinson said. "Following traffic laws designed to protect everyone using our roadways can help prevent crashes and save lives."
