13-year-old boy killed when ATV flips at Michigan sand dunes, 2nd teen injured

(WWJ) A 13-year-old boy was killed in an ATV crash at a popular tourist spot in western Michigan over the weekend.

Local TV station WZZM reported that the teen was with his 13-year-old cousin, who was also on a four-wheeler, at Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Oceana County's Mears.

Sheriff Craig Mast said the pair was traveling at a high rate of speed when they went over a steep incline on the dunes, causing both vehicles to flip over.

One of the boys was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other teen was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he's being treated for serious injuries. The boys' names were not released, but officials said they were from Illinois.

The sheriff said this was the first fatality at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, around 75 miles north of Grand Rapids, this season.
