13-year-old girl and her mom face charges in stabbing of 8th grader at Detroit's Gompers Elementary-Middle School

Prosecutors say the mom gave her daughter a pocketknife to "defend herself"

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 13-year-old girl and her mother have both been charged in connection with the stabbing of an 8th grader at a Detroit school.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Tuesday announced her case against 37-year-old Lacara Anita Parks of Detroit, along with her daughter, in connection with the incident last Wednesday at Gompers Elementary-Middle School on Detroit's west side.

It's alleged, according to prosecutors, that the mom "provided the teen with a pocketknife to use if she needed to defend herself on the way home from school," and that she gave the knife to her daughter, am 8th grader at Gompers, while on school property.

A short time later, at around 8:40 a.m. that same day, prosecutors say the daughter used the knife to attack a classmate, stabbing the 13-year-old girl multiple times.

The wounded victim — who was stabbed in her head, back, arm, and neck, according to her mother — was treated at a hospital, and is now back home with her family.

The young suspect and her mom were both arrested following the incident.

The teenage defendant has been charged with Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, and Possession of a Weapon in a Weapons-Free School Zone. She appeared in juvenile court on Oct. 9, and received a $10,000 cash/surety bond with the conditions that she have no contact with any Gompers students, and cannot possess knives.

Lacara Anita Parks has been charged with two misdemeanors: Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, and Possession of a Weapon in a Weapons-Free School Zone.

Parks is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Wednesday morning, in 36th District Court.

“This case illustrates that a lot of things went wrong on many levels and as a result a child was stabbed. It’s unacceptable. We can do so much better than this for our children,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy, in a staement.

The name of the teen who was charged will not be released, due to her juvenile status.

Gompers was closed after the stabbing, but reopened on Monday.
