(WWJ) Michigan State Police are warning drivers to slow down and be careful on the roads as winter descends upon Metro Detroit.

They said 150 “preventable” crashes occurred across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties between Friday morning and Saturday morning— as the area experienced its first significant snowfall of the season.

“Well, our first ‘snow’ of the year didn’t go very well with the risky driving behaviors we see everyday,” they announced in a social media post. “We were lucky there were no serious injuries.”

The crashes included a 12-car pileup on I-96 in Oakland County, near Kent Lake Road, on Friday morning.

Four patrol cars were struck while investigating the crashes, but no one was hurt; State Police said.

They added that many drivers were still going too fast or following too close.

“Weather doesn’t cause crashes, drivers do,” they said. “Buckle up, phones down, move over and be kind.”
