GROSSE ILE (WWJ) A boating accident in Grosse Ile left one person dead and another injured.

Grosse Ile Police said the accident occurred in the early morning of Sunday, August 2, southeast of Celeron Island.

According to authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard received a distress report over Marine Radio Channel 16. The Coast Guard notified county and local law enforcement, as well as TowBoatUS of Gibraltar.

Responding units found a 37-foot white Rinker vessel that had run aground on the Habitat Shoals.

The vessel was approximately 80% out of the water, police said.

Authorities determined two people were on the boat. They pronounced the passenger, a Brownstown Township resident, dead at the scene.

First responders rushed the boat owner, a Rockwood resident, to the hospital in unknown condition.

The vessel's home port is Humbug Marina in Gibraltar. It departed the marina at approximately 2:30 a.m., according to investigators.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office took custody of the deceased for examination.

Police are still working to notify the next of kin.
