ANN ARBOR (WWJ) A shooting in Ann Arbor ended with a young Westland man dead, and three people in custody.
Ann Arbor Police said they responded to reports of a shooting near Platt and Packard on Friday, September 26, around 1:15 p.m. Upon arrival; they found the victim, 18, with gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead, police said.
Their preliminary investigation suggests the man was injured “during an exchange of gunfire” after exiting a local business, according to police.
Authorities said the first responding officer, who was conducting Vision Zero traffic enforcement in the area, was involved in a brief pursuit with the suspects’ vehicle. It ended when the suspected crashed the vehicle into a tree in the area of Platt and Lorraine.
Officers arrested all three suspects within a short period of time. No further information was released about the suspects, including whether or not they were injured in the crash.
No officers were injured, according to police.
“While the investigation into a motive remains ongoing, we do not believe this incident was random,” Ann Arbor Police said in a statement.
Authorities do not believe there are any additional suspects.
Michigan State Police Helicopter Unit, the University of Michigan Police Department drone team, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Milan Police, and Pittsfield Township Police Department also assisted with the scene.
“I want to commend the swift and professional actions of our officers in bringing this dangerous situation under control,” Ann Arbor Police said in a statement. “Our department remains committed to ensuring the safety of our community as the investigation continues.”
