DETROIT (WWJ) — Michigan State Police have closed a portion of I-75 after a pair of crashes involving Wayne County Roads Division trucks Monday in Detroit.

The crashes happened late Monday morning on southbound I-75 just before Schaefer Highway, leading to big delays for drivers in the area.

MSP officials say just after 10 a.m. a Ford Escape crashed into a work truck. No one was injured in the incident.

Not long after the first crash, a 48-year-old driving a Jeep Compass was driving in the left lane and slammed into a second Wayne County arrow board truck.

While the Wayne County driver was not injured, officials say the driver of the Jeep was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Authorities say speed was a factor in both crashes.

“We want to remind drivers how important it is to drive at a safe speed. As construction zones continue to ramp up, it is important to focus on driving. This is not only for your safety, but the safety of road workers,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said.

WWJ Traffic reporter Scott Ryan says the southbound lanes of the freeway have been closed at I-96 as MSP troopers investigate and clean up the scene.

As of noon, traffic was being routed off at I-96. Drivers can take I-96 to westbound I-94 to southbound Southfield Road and rejoin I-75 from there, Ryan said.

Officials have also closed the ramps to southbound I-75 from eastbound I-96 and the Lodge Freeway.
