SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with a string of air conditioning unit thefts in Metro Detroit.

Southfield Police say 36-year-old Alan Frederick and 37-year-old Jevon Smith, both of Detroit, are allegedly behind more than a dozen stolen AC units.

Most recently, police said six units were taken from the Riverstone Apartments on Shiawassee St. near 8 Mile Rd.

According to investigators, Southfield officers conducted surveillance operation and the pair was caught at another complex while trying steal more. That's when they were taken into custody.

Back in June, there was a similar situation in Harper Woods, but it's not yet clear if those incidents are connected.

Frederick and Smith have been charged by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office with malicious destruction of personal property, along with attempted larceny more than $1,000 and less than $20,000.

Both were given a bond of $100,000 cash/surety 10%, with a GPS tether if they do post bond and are released.

Their next scheduled court date is July 11.
