DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two people were shot after an attempted carjacking turned into a shootout on Detroit's west side Thursday night.

According to Detroit Police Commander Vernal Newson, the victims were approached by masked suspects at around 10 a.m., as they were leaving a nightclub on the Southfield Service Drive, near Joy Road.

"Two individuals in a blue vehicle, a blue sedan, pulled along side of them. They were masked up," Newsom told reporters. "They announced a holdup. One of the victims in the Charger produced a weapon, a CPL holder, and one of the offenders in the blue vehicle opened fire on the victims' vehicle."

There was an exchange of gunfire, Newsom said, and the victims — ages 19 and 23 — were both shot in the back.

Newson said a bystander who witnessed the incident also started shooting at the suspect's car, as they drove away.

Detroit Police patrolling the neighborhood found and arrested two suspects. "Our robbery detail, just coincidentally in the area, the spotted the vehicle and they were able to take the vehicle in custody without incident," Newsom said.

The victims were treated at a local hospital for their injuries, and are expected to be OK. They have since been released from the hospital.

Police believe the victims were targeted for their car: a high-end, late-model Dodge Charger.

The suspects' names were not immediately released, with charges pending.
