BLOOMFIELD HILLS (WWJ) - A fire that started in a garage destroyed two units at an Oakland County condo complex Friday afternoon. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the blaze.

At around 11:30 a.m., WWJ became aware of a fire at Arbors of Bloomfield Condos on Woodward Ave at Arbor Court, just north of Lone Pine Rd in Bloomfield Hills.

Fire trucks and emergency response vehicles were parked along Woodward Ave, blocking the two right lanes on the southbound side.

WWJ's Alexis Ware spoke with Bloomfield Hills Public Safety Captain Tom Vansimaeys at the scene.

Captain Vansimaeys said fire crews initially responded to reports of a car fire in a garage, but when they arrived, they found that garage completely engulfed with fire and smoke spreading to the units themselves.

"There was smoke throughout two condos, they're attached condos," Vansimaeys told Ware. "And there were occupants in one of the condos that we were able to rescue."

Firefighters battled the flames for over two hours, working to make sure keep any hotspots from reigniting.

According to Ware, the roof over the two condos had caved in, the garage was completely burned and the cars covered in debris. The interior of the structure sustained significant water damage.

Captain Vansimaeys thanked Troy, Bloomfield Twp, Berkley and Beverly Hills Fire Departments for assisting with the blaze.

DTE and Consumers Energy also sent workers to the scene to check gas lines and ensure surrounding condos still had power.

It is still unclear what caused the fire, and an investigation is underway.
