HOWELL (WWJ) - A 2-year-old boy is dead after apparently finding an unsecured gun in a Howell home and accidentally shooting himself on Sunday.
While Howell police officials expect to release more information about the incident later this week, authorities confirmed to WWJ Monday the boy was the son of a Dearborn police officer.
Authorities say it happened around 6 p.m. at a home on Oak Squire Lane in Rolling Oaks subdivision, north of M-59 in Howell.
Livingston County EMS personnel took the toddler to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No further details have been released at this time.
A nearby neighbor, told WWJ's Jon Hewett he was home at the time of the shooting.
"Safety's always number one. And you don't allow children near (guns)," he said.
The fatal shooting remains under investigation.
