(WWJ) A 2-year-old girl is hospitalized in critical condition after she was injured in a dog attack and shooting on Detroit's east side.

Authorities say it happened just after 10 a.m. Monday at a home in the 10700 block of Wayburn, in the area of Whittier and I-94.

According to Detroit Police 9th Precinct Captain Johnson, a resident opened up the front door and a "huge pit bull" ran inside -- charging at and attacking the little girl.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell said the child's father accidently shot his daughter while trying to save her from the dog.

"She was attacked by the dog and had facial lacerations," Fornell told WWJ Newsradio 950's Dan Jenkins. "And as the gentleman got his gun, he shot the dog and unfortunately the bullet went through the dog and hit the girl in the arm."

"Our firefighters, you know, treated her and the ambulance transported her to St. John's Hospital," Fornell said. "She's gonna be ok... But probably a pretty traumatic experience for her."

The child was initially reported to be in stable condition. While Johnson described her as "critical" later in the day, he said she was expected to survive.

The dog was killed in the shooting.

Johnson said police believe it was a stray, but they're still investigating.

Child Protective Services has been notified of the incident.
