STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- It's the final few weeks for two Metro Detroit-area Macy's stores that will soon be closed for good — and employees have been given notice.

Letters sent from Macy's Human Resources Department to the state say 117 workers at the Macy's store at the former Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights and 92 workers at the Oakland Mall store in Troy will be laid off between March 18 and March 31, 2025.

The letters say the job eliminations are permanent as the stores are closing.

The Lakeside and Oakland Mall locations were on a list of 66 Macy's stores deemed “underproductive” by the retailer, and slated to close this year.

According to the Macy's, this is part of a "Bold New Chapter" plan designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth that includes closing approximately 150 stores over a three-year period, while investing in its 350 remaining Macy’s locations through fiscal year 2026.

These two closures will leave five Macy’s stores remaining in Southeast Michigan. They are: Somerset Collection in Troy, Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, Southland Center in Taylor, and Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor.

The Sterling Heights Macy's closure comes as the defunct Lakeside Mall is set to be demolished, making way for a town-square style mixed-use development on the massive property, at Hall and Schoenherr roads.

Earlier reports had said Lakeside's new owners agreed to keep Macy’s open as the property was redeveloped. This, however, was prior to Macy's choosing to eliminate the store.

Macy's said it would be running clearance sales at the closing stores over the next several weeks. However, returns are no longer being accepted at these locations.
