22-year-old man from Ohio killed in snowmobile crash into tree in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

(WWJ) A snowmobiler has died after crashing into a tree in Michigan's Upper Peninsula over the weekend.

According to the Michigan State Police, troopers with the Negaunee Post responded to the scene of at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 17), on a trail near highway H-58 in Alger County's Shingleton Township.

A preliminary investigation found that a snowmobiler was traveling on Trail 8 when the driver was unable to negotiate a corner, and crashed into a tree at a high rate of speed.

Emergency responders rendered aid, but the snowmobiler — a 22-year-old man from Garrettsville, Ohio — died of his injuries.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this loss,” said Lt. Ben Eckola, MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer, in a statement.

MSP was assisted by Alger County EMS and Alger County Rescue 21.

The man's name was not released.
