(WWJ) Nearly two dozen employees at a local Whole Foods Market store have tested positive for COVID-19.

The City of Detroit says 23 workers employees at the Mack Avenue Midtown location are infected with the virus.

The store is now receiving rapid testing for all employees.

“We have received a commitment from Whole Foods that no workers or close contacts of any employee who has tested positive will be allowed back to work until they have produced a negative test result,” Detroit's Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair, statement. “This is a reminder to all grocery stores of the availability of vaccinations and the importance of getting their employees vaccinated to make sure this does not happen again.”

A spokesperson for Whole Foods says the safety of team members and customers remains the company's top priority, adding: "We support any Team Member who is diagnosed positive or placed in quarantine so they can prioritize their health and stay home. We have rolled out extensive measures to keep people safe in our stores and are diligently following all guidance from local health and food safety authorities.”

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the perent positive rate and COVID-19 numbers have been declining in recent weeks. However, ongoing confirmation of cases of the more contagious U.K. variant B.1.1.7. has health officials worried.

On Thursday, MDHHS said 1,388 new COVID-19 cases were logged in Michigan bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 585,352 since counting began in March.

A total of 529,080 people in the state who were infected are considered officially recovered, and 15,453 people have died.
