24-year-old kayaker drowns while apparently attempting to fish in icy Northern Michigan lake: MSP

ROSCOMMON COUNTY (WWJ) -- The body of a young man has been pulled from an icy lake in Northern Michigan, after police say he drowned over the weekend.

At around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday. the Michigan State Police Seventh District says a 911 call came in from a witness who said he saw a person who was drowning in the water of Dunham Lake, in Roscommon County.


The person, later identified as a 24-year-old man Sanford, Michigan, man was next to a kayak, and may have been using the craft to break the ice and fish from it, police said.

The caller tried unsuccessfully to rescue the man, according to MSP.

A trooper from the MSP Houghton Lake Post responded along with deputies from the Roscommon County Sheriff's Office. Deputies deployed their ice rescue, air boats and dive team, but it was too late to save the man.

The Roscommon County Dive Team recovered recovered the man's body the same day.

The man's name is not being released at this time.

MSP said the Roscommon County Sheriff's Office, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Denton Township Police Department, and Nester, Richfield, Markey, Lake Townships and Butman Township Fire all assisted in the rescue effors.
