(WWJ) Three young men are facing charges following a bust by a multi-agency law enforcement unit that's cracking down on auto thefts in metro Detroit.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said Leondre Chansey Jones and Deangelo Brown Jr., both 17 of Detroit, and Anthony Edward Barrett, 18, of Harper Woods, were arrested and several hundred thousand dollars in stolen vehicles were recovered as a result of a collaboration of officers from Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties.
The auto theft surveillance unit, which mainly targets stolen high-end Chrysler vehicles such as Dodge Chargers, Dodge Challengers and Jeep Grand Cherokees, recovered five stolen vehicles in this this cast — including a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, valued at $100,000, officials said.
The young men were armed when they were arrested, according to the sheriff's office, and three loaded handguns were confiscated.
The stolen vehicle were found in Dearborn and Southfield
"There has been a spike of larceny from autos and auto thefts, and through the great partnership with all of the local police agencies, a very prolific armed criminal group has been stopped in their tracks," Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, in a statement. "Now, they need to be held accountable."
Chansey, Brown and Barrett are each charged with receiving and concealing stolen property over $10,000, carrying a concealed weapon, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Bond was set at $15,000 cash, surety, or 10% each, and all three were scheduled to appear in court for a pre-examination conference on Sept. 30.
The OSCO said the following agencies were involved in the case: Canton Special Operations detectives; Farmington Hills Police and Directed Patrol Unit; Hazel Park Police; Livonia Special Investigations Unit detectives; Macomb County Sheriff's Auto Theft Unit (MATS) which is comprised of detectives from the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, Eastpointe Police, St. Clair Shores Police, Centerline Police, Roseville Police, Sterling Heights Police and Clinton Township Police; Oakland County Sheriff's Office and Oakland County Auto Theft Unit (OCAT); Southfield Police; South Oakland Narcotics Intelligence Consortium (SONIC) comprised of detectives from Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield and Novi police departments; Sterling Heights Special Investigations Unit detectives; Warren Special Operations detectives; Waterford Special Investigations Unit detectives and Westland Special Investigations Unit detectives.
