SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) – One person is hospitalized after a three-car crash on the Lodge Freeway caused major backups for Metro Detroit drivers on Thursday afternoon.

Michigan State Police troopers were called to northbound M-10 at Telegraph Road around 1:40 p.m.due to a crash blocking the freeway.

There were three vehicles, but only two drivers were present when troopers showed up.

MSP officials say that's because a random Superior EMS rig came across the scene and the crew was quick to jump into action. Officials say they immediately took the driver to the hospital due to the seriousness of their injuries.

Police are still investigating, but say preliminary information indicates all three vehicles involved in the crash were headed north on the Lodge when the driver of one car changed lanes to the right and was rear-ended.

The impact caused both vehicles to skid out of control, then a third vehicle slammed into the driver's side door of one vehicle, causing extensive damage.

One of the drivers sustained significant injuries to their leg and head, but was expected to make a full recovery, according to MSP.

The freeway remains closed at Telegraph for the investigation, as of 5 p.m.
