DETROIT (WWJ) — Three children have been taken to the hospital following a house explosion on Detroit’s east side.
The explosion happened around 3 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 7 Mile Road and Barlow Street, just east of Hoover Street.
The house has been deemed a "total loss," according to Detroit Fire Chief James Harris. The house next door suffered "significant damage," according to the chief.
Three children inside the neighboring home sustained what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries after glass and debris blew into the home.
Harris said crews were still working to extinguish flames, as of 4:30 p.m.
WWJ's Jon Hewett reported from the scene that neighbors told authorities they had seen a woman on the porch of the destroyed home earlier in the day.
"Whether or not she was home at the time of this explosion, authorities are not commenting. They frankly don't know and they are not commenting until they're able to go through this home and have more details definitively on whether there was someone home at the time or not," Hewett reported.
A cause of the explosion has not been determined.
DTE Energy crews were called to the home to help secure the scene.
One man working on a roofing project in the area said he saw debris be thrown 50 feet or more into the air.
