ST. CLAIR COUNTY (WWJ) - Authorities confirmed the death of one man Saturday morning after he drove his vehicle off a ferry ramp and crashed into the St. Clair River.
The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office said in a social media post that they became aware of the incident around 4:45 a.m. on Dec. 3 when their dive team was requested by the Clay Township Police Department.
According to deputies, a 34-year-old man drove his 2014 Audi A6 off the ramp at the Harsens Island ferry on the land side and into the North Channel.
"The dive team responded immediately and was able to extricate the male from the submerged vehicle," the sheriff's office said. "He was transported to Ascension River District where he was pronounced deceased."
The man's identity was not released by authorities as notifications were being made to family members.
Deputies said the dive team was able to remove the man's vehicle from the Channel later the same morning.
No other details were made available.
