Health dept. reports 35 new school outbreaks, 10,000+ more COVID-19 cases in Michigan

(WWJ) There are nearly three dozen new coronavirus outbreaks at Michigan schools and universities -- but the numbers are dropping.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Monday reported 35 new school outbreaks, after 53 and 63 were reported the two previous weeks.

Among the schools with new outbreaks are North Farmington High School, Plymouth High School and Richmond High School, along with Heritage Junior High in Sterling Heights.

In addition to the K-12 schools, ten members of the Northern Michigan University hockey team have been infected by the virus and there were three students with positive tests at Rochester University.

This update comes two week after the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services ordered all high schools and colleges in the state to move to remote learning.

What counts as a school "outbreak"? In accordance with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists’ outbreak definition, educational institutions (i.e., grades K-12 and institutions of higher education) that have been found by their local health department to have two or more COVID-19 cases who may have shared exposure on school grounds and are from different households are included. Case counts for school-related outbreaks include those associated with before and after school programs, including school-sponsored sports. If your institution is listed, your local health department and/or school will contact you directly if you or your child) were possibly exposed.

Meanwhile, Michigan added 10,428 confirmed cases of the coronavirus from Sunday and Monday combined -- which is about 5,214 per day.

In addition to the additional cases, 98 more deaths were reported Sunday and Monday, bringing Michigan's death toll since the pandemic hit in mid-March has risen to 9,134.

With many Michigan hospitals now at or near capacity, MDHHS said there are now around 4,300 patients receiving treatment for the virus in hospitals statewide.

Michigan's percent positive rate remains at 13.7%, up from below 3% during the summer months.

A total of 165,269 people who were infected in Michigan have recovered, health officials say.
