DETROIT (WWJ) - A man who tried to lying to troopers about his identity at a Detroit bus stop couldn't fool the nose of a police K-9 who led authorities to the discovery of more than 4 kilograms of drugs in the man's luggage last week.
As reported by WDIV, Michigan State Police announced the seizure of the drugs as well as the arrest of Antonio Frank Bufkin, 39 or 40, over the Aug. 8 encounter that occurred at the Greyhound bus station off 1001 Howard St.
State police said detectives were at the station and noticed Bufkin standing in line around 6:50 a.m. as he was waiting to board a bus scheduled to take off at 7 a.m.
When Bufkin made eye contact with troopers, he left the line and went to sit in the lobby, rising the suspicions of the detectives.
The detectives went over and questioned Bufkin, MSP said, and asked if he had any identification. He told them "no" and then said his name was "Antonio Brown." Troopers said the man then provided a birth date and address, which later turned out to to be false.
Bufkin was confronted by the detectives when they couldn't find "Antonio Brown" at the address he provided, a criminal complaint via WDIV stated. Bufkin then revealed his true name and mentioned he may have a traffic ticket.
Troopers detained Bufkin and confirmed his identity with information from a wallet found in his pocket. He was taken to the freight area where a police K-9 alerted detectives to the presence of drugs in his luggage.
After obtaining a search warrant, authorities found multiple Ziploc bags full of a white substance, suspected to be about 4,071 grams of methamphetamine.
Bufkin was taken to the MSP substation while the substance was sent to the crime lab for testing.
According to the criminal complaint obtained by WDIV, troopers believe there's probable cause that Bufkin intended to distribute the drugs found in his possession.
