WARREN (WWJ) -- Warren's police commissioner wants four teenagers arrested for a shooting outside Warren Woods Tower High School last week to be charged as adults.
Police said the suspects — two 14-year-olds and two 15-year-old students — were taken out of class on Monday, and taken into custody without incident.
According to Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer, the four teens were involved in the shooting and of a 26-year-old Roseville man as he sat in a car near the high school.
Dwyer said the teens targeted the man, whom police say was known to sell marijuana in the area of the school.
"I want the public to know that the incident was not a random crime," Dwyer said, at a news conference on Tuesday. "This investigation has shown that this was a planned robbery attempt which was coordinated by all four of the suspects that are in custody."
That victim was shot multiple times He remains hospitalized in critical condition, officials said, and is likely to be paralyzed.
The shooting led to a lockdown at the high school as well as the Macomb Community College South Campus and Briarwood Elementary, near 12 Mile and Hayes roads, the afternoon of Sept. 14.
Dwyer said detectives are seeking armed robbery, assault with intent to murder conspiracy and weapon charges against all of the juveniles involved in this incident.
Due to the seriousness of these violent crimes, and that they occurred so near the schools as school was dismissing, Dwyer said he believe the teens "must be charged as adults."
"And I'll say this, without a doubt, we have the evidence to support the charges," the commissioner added. "We have the evidence."
Search warrants executed at the teens' homes — three in Warren and the fourth in Oak Park — resulted in the seizure of five weapons, police said. Those guns are now undergoing ballistics testing.
The four suspects are being held in Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center.
A fifth student was also interviewed by investigators but was released.
