WESTLAND (WWJ) -- Officials in Westland say a small child was run over by a golf cart over the weekend at the city's Blues, Brews and BBQ event, but there wasn't a person in the driver's seat when the accident happened.

The good news is, she was apparently uninjured.

According to city's fire chief, the Westland Fire Department's arson dog "Bella" was sitting in the front seat of the cart being used for the event, while a firefighter was sitting in the passenger seat.

The dog apparently jumped down, laid down and hit the gas pedal, causing the cart to lunge forward. The department said "firefighters reacted quickly" to try to steer the cart away from any people.

Before firefighters could bring the cart to a halt, officials say the vehicle struck a 4-year-old girl, and the passenger side front tire ran over her left leg.

The little little girl was visibly shaken up, officials said, but was checked out by paramedics and fortunately didn't suffer any obvious injuries. The child's mother refused further treatment or transport to an emergency room.

Fire officials said the child was "back to eating her popcorn" and jumping in the fire department bounce house within ten minutes of the incident.

On Facebook, Talitha Marie said her child was also hit by the runaway cart. "My four year old daughter was also knocked down and laying face down, flat on the grass parallel to the cart," she wrote. "Thankfully walked away with only a bruise on her arm, but she was and still is very scared. Glad nobody was seriously injured."

The department added that Bella is doing just fine and "will be back on the cart, just with extra precautions in place!"
