BERLIN CHARTER TWP. (WWJ) - Downriver police said they were investigating a reported armed robbery and searching the area for two suspects on Thursday when they discovered the incident had been fabricated.
Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough confirmed a 41-year-old Frenchtown Township man was arrested after police say he made up a story about being robbed at gunpoint by two Black males around 4:30 a.m. on August 4th.
The man told deputies the alleged incident occurred on the 8000 block of Swan Creek Road in the Newport area of Berlin Charter Township.
The man said he was working his delivery route when he was approached by two black men with guns. The man provided a description of the two suspects and their vehicle.
The sheriff's office said deputies, along with other local law enforcement, helped launch an investigation and began to search the area for the two men.
Deputies began to sense something was amiss when information provided by the 41-year-old didn't match up and discrepancies in his story were discovered by police.
"When confronted with this information, the 41-year-old Frenchtown Township man, advised detectives that the incident was fabricated and never occurred," the sheriff's office said in a press release. "As a result, the false report tied up numerous deputies, detectives and officers who could have provided their services elsewhere."
Deputies arrested the man and took him to Monroe County Jail -- authorities said he is awaiting his arraignment on charges of filing a false police report.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said they are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information has been asked to contact the department at 734-240-7530.
