DETROIT (WWJ) - There is no danger to the community, according to police, after an armed standoff ended peacefully on Detroit's west side.
WWJ's Mike Campbell said there was a heavy police presence, along with firefighters and SWAT, at the scene on 28th Street, where officials said a gunman was holed up Friday morning.
"They have the entire area blocked off with police, SWAT team, fire trucks, you name it, and there is smoke in the air," Campbell reported, from the area of McGraw Ave. and I-94. "I have heard reports, just rumor really, that there may have been an indication...the person was threatening to set the house on fire rather than come out."
Providing an update later in the day, Detroit Police Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald said the whole thing started with a carjacking, just before 3 a.m.
The carjackers then drove away in the victim's Jeep Cherokee SRT, which police were able to track — using both a K9 team and a cell phone that was left in the vehicle — to the house where the suspects barricaded themselves inside.
"As officers were setting up a perimeter, there was a gunshot heard inside the home," Fitzgerald said, "and they continued to try to make contact."
At around 10 a.m., Fitzgerald said five people inside the home surrendered without further incident. This included two juveniles, believed to be 14 or 15 year old.
The others in the home were described as young adults, including two young women and one young man. It's not clear at this time how many of these people, or which ones, were allegedly involved in the shooting or the carjacking.
No injuries were reported.
There was no further information released about the suspects in custody, or what charges they may face, as the investigation continues.
