A Michigan State Police trooper from the Brighton Post, conducting a traffic stop on I-94 in the Belleville area, was assaulted and nearly run over when the two suspects sped off, beginning the chase, said authorities.

The suspects, in a blue Dodge Charger with temporary tags, drove into Wayne County where the police said they lost sight of them near I-94 and Haggerty Road. Shortly after, police said a Garden City officer caught sight of the Charger and assisted MSP Metro South troopers in the pursuit.

The Charger headed onto eastbound I-96 to southbound I-75, exiting onto some surface streets and then eventually onto eastbound I-94 and Southfield Freeway where police put out stop sticks to flatten their tires.

The car came to a stop near Hall Road in Macomb County, ending the 50 mile chase from Belleville to Chesterfield Township.

The suspects were then taken into custody without further incident, authorities said. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.

MSP said no one was hurt in the pursuit.
