69-year-old man killed in house fire on Detroit's east side

DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Detroit Fire Department is investigating a fire on the city's east side Wednesday morning that killed an elderly man.

Fire officials tell WWJ the fire broke out at a two-story home in the area of Vernor Highway and Mt. Elliott Street around 9 a.m.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell tells WWJ crews arrived to find the second floor of the home engulfed in flames. Neighbors notified them a 69-year-old man lived up there, according to Fornell.

Firefighters were able to get in and knock the flames down, but by the time they found the man's body, it was too late. Fornell says the man suffered serious burns. No other injuries were reported in the blaze.

The victim's name has not been released.

Crews are still investigating the cause of the fire.

"So at this particular time, the fire investigators are out there, they're going through the building now," Fornell said. "I just talked to them and they don't really have a cause yet, but they're interviewing people and they're going through the building."
