DETROIT (WWJ) -- Dozens of residents have been misplaced after a fire ripped through the Baton Rouge Apartments on Detroit's west side.
WWJ's Mike Campbell reports that a blaze broke out at the multi-unit complex -- located on West Chicago at Braille, between Evergreen and the Rouge Park -- around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Resident Jacqueline Wyatt said she and her son first heard a "boom, like a transformer" exploded, and saw a flash of light just prior to the fire.
Soon afterwards, people began knocking on doors, warning neighbors to evacuate the building. Wyatt ended up spending the night in her car.
Wyatt tells WWJ that she did not have renters insurance, and she and her son will have to start from scratch.
A Detroit police officer was hurt as crews responded to the scene to clear out the building. There has been no word of any other injuries at this time.
An investigation into what caused the fire is currently underway.
