DETROIT (WWJ) — A group of seven suspects are in custody after allegedly fleeing Detroit and Michigan State Police in a stolen car over the weekend.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4 on Detroit’s west side as Trooper 2, an MSP helicopter that patrols over the city, spotted a stolen Kia that was detected on a license plate reader.
MSP troopers were sent to the area to try to make a traffic stop, but the suspect driver fled and troopers on the ground did not give chase.
Trooper 2 continued to track the stolen Kia from above. Video posted to social media Monday shows the stolen car running multiple red lights while speeding south on Livernois.
Eventually, the car came to a stop in the area of Oakman Boulevard and Petoskey Avenue, with seven suspects running out of the car and into a home.
Several police cars arrived a short time later and surrounded the suspects, some of whom had tried to hide in an alley behind the home.
All seven were eventually taken into custody.
While officials have not said where the car was stolen from or when it happened, it was recovered, along with a gun.
“It is not everyday you see seven suspects run from a stolen vehicle,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on X. “Again we see through the use of technology and MSP aviation, another stolen car recovered and a firearm is off the streets.”
Authorities have not released the names or ages of any of the suspects and Shaw said at this time it has not been determined whether any of the suspects committed any other crimes.
