71-year-old man dies after “whiteout” conditions on I-94 cause pileup involving 14 passenger vehicles, three semi-trucks

KALAMAZOO (WWJ) A 71-year-old Illinois man died after he was critically injured in a crash involving 14 passenger vehicles and three semi-trucks during “white out conditions” on I-94.

The crash happened in the afternoon of Monday, December 2nd, at Mile Marker #46 in Hartford Township—about 40 miles west of Kalamazoo.

In a statement on social media, State Police said most drivers were going too fast as blowing snow caused whiteout conditions on the freeway.

Fifth District troopers arrived on scene to investigate the pileup of 14 passenger vehicles and three commercial trucks. 15 additional vehicles slid off the road, according to police.

The man was rushed to Grand Rapids Spectrum Health Hospital. In a social media statement on Saturday; police said he died from his injuries on December 3rd.

The victim was identified as a resident of Burbank, IL. His name was not released.

The crash remains under investigation.
