(WWJ) One person is in police custody after an 8-year-old boy was shot and killed in Canton.

Canton Police said the boy died Tuesday night, shortly after he was shot at around 4 p.m., at a home on Old Michigan Ave.

Police are only saying the boy was shot after a firearm was discharged inside the house. Someone in the home called 911, and EMS took the child to an area hospital.

Some people in the area say the boy's father was cleaning a gun when it went off, although those details have not been confirmed by police.

Police said the investigation report will be turned over later Wednesday to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office to determine what charges, if any, will be filed in the case.

“At this time there is no danger to the public, and we ask that you respect the privacy of the family,” said Police Chief Chad Baugh, in a statement, adding: "We ask our community to keep this family in your thoughts."

No names have been released.
