MARQUETTE COUNTY (WWJ) - An elderly hiker was safely located after a brief search when she became separated from her hiking group in the Upper Peninsula on Thursday.
According to the Marquette County Sheriff's Office via WLUC, an 87-year-old woman was reported missing just before 5:30 pm. on Aug. 3 while hiking with a group on Hogback Mountain in the Huron Mountain range just north of Marquette.
The hiker became separated from the group and was unable to be located on the rugged 3.1-mile out-and-back trail.
Deputies along with the Marquette County Search and Rescue team responded to the area. At 6:00 p.m., authorities found the woman west of Hogback.
The sheriff's county said the hiker was in good health and has since been reunited with her family.
The trial at Hogback Mountain is described by popular outdoor activity and fitness website/app AllTrials as a moderately challenging route on a small rocky peak that takes hikers a total of one hour and 29 minutes on average to complete.
It has an elevation of 564 feet and is realitively easy to hike with trails marked with white and blue blazes, AllTrails added.
"The majority is relatively flat and easy, but the last half mile is a steep incline with a scramble at the top," the outdoor adventure site stated.
Thursday's brief search comes almost two weeks after two young boys were separated from their hiking group at the Hiawatha Boy Scout camp on Doe Lake Road in the Upper Peninsula's Au Train Township.
According to authorities, the Alger County Dispatchers were able to contact the children through 911 texting and obtained their GPS coordinates for the search team.
The boys were told to stay put so rescuers could find them.
Officials reminded residents and visitors that 911 texting is available in the event of an emergency, even if there is no cell service.
