DETROIT (WWJ) -- An infant is safe and a barricade situation was resolved early Monday morning after police negotiators convinced an alleged domestic violence suspect to peacefully surrender after his girlfriend was attacked with a knife.
Officers from the Detroit Police Department's 5th Precinct responded to reports of an attack in the 17200 block of Sioux St., near Warren and Cadieux on the city's east side around 2 a.m. Monday.
When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they were met by a woman who had clearly been hurt by a knife, according to DPD Commander Ian Severy, who provided an update over Facebook Live after the incident was resolved.
The victim conveyed to police that she and her significant other had gotten into an altercation, causing her to flee the house.
During their her escape, the woman said her boyfriend had threatened the life of their nine-month-old child, who was still inside the house with the suspect.
Because of the threat to the infant, the 5th Precinct implemented their barricaded person protocol and called in a Special Response Team, who arrived just after 3 a.m.
By 4:30 a.m., when Commander Severy made his report, the crisis negotiators had convinced the man to exit the building without further incident.
The baby was found unharmed and the mother taken to a local hospital to be treated for her wounds, which were not life-threatening.
According to Commander Severy, DPD was still examining the scene of the barricade situation. He indicated that no firearms had been found inside the home, yet, and said that while the suspect and victim appeared to have had some alcohol, it was not possible to confirm whether or not the drinking played a significant role in the fight.
The Commander said he was grateful for the non-violent resolution and thanked the public for their patience throughout the situation.
This is an open case with all details are considered preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues.
