SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) A Thanksgiving morning fatal fire is under investigation in Southfield, according multiple reports.

Both the Detroit News and ClickonDetroit report a 91-year-old woman was killed when fire broke out at a home on Leemoor (29,000 block), in the area of 12 Mile and Evergreen, just after 10:45 a.m.

Southfield Fire Chief John Menifee told the Detroit News the home was engulfed in "30 to 40 foot flames" coming from the center of the building.

Fire officials found the 91-year-old woman inside.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Menifee told the Detroit News he was unsure if the home had working smoke detectors.

State data shows 111 Michigan residents have died in 93 house fires since January 1st. Fire officials said most of them did not have working smoke alarms, adding most fatal fires happen between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
