WASHTENAW COUNTY (WWJ) - Two drivers escaped any serious injuries Tuesday morning after an elderly driver tried to turn around on I-94 in Washtenaw County and was hit by a semi truck hauling thousands of pounds of car batteries.
Michigan State Police said both drivers miraculously sustained minor injuries in the incident which occurred just before 8 a.m. on the border of Chelsea and Sylvan Township on I-94.
According to troopers, a 92-year-old man behind the wheel of a silver Cadillac was heading westbound when he attempted to make a U-turn on the expressway.
A semi truck, heading eastbound on the same freeway, struck the Cadillac and went off the road where it rolled before coming to rest upside down.
MSP said the semi truck was hauling 70,000 pounds of car batteries, which officials determined were not leaking and remained intact after the crash.
The driver of the semi tuck and the Cadillac were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, troopers added.
Clean up efforts had eastbound I-94 down to one lane with the eastbound entrance ramp from M-52 also blocked off, with MSP urging drivers to find alternative routes,
After work was completed to clear the scene, the freeway was back open to traffic by around 4 p.m.
