ST. JOSEPH TWP. (WWJ) — A semi truck driver is dead after a confrontation with a police officer in Southwest Michigan Monday night.

Michigan State Police say officers found the semi in St. Joseph Township, located in Berrien County, and that the semi truck driver allegedly crashed into a St. Joseph Township Police Department vehicle, and then crashed into a home.

Police said the driver got out of the truck and ran away, eventually leading to a "violent altercation" with a St. Joseph Township PD officer.

MSP said the officer shot the driver, who was taken to the hospital, but later died from his injuries.

State police said the truck driver was 42 years old and from Tennessee, but they have not released his name.

The officer suffered minor injuries, and was placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated. The officer's name is also being withheld at this time.
