One more hot, humid day in metro Detroit Sunday before heat subsides

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A little bit of cool relief may be on the way for metro Detroiters after the weekend.

AccuWeather forecasters say the area can expect one more "very warm and humid day" on Sunday, with high temperatures expected to climb into the high 80s once again.

Many parts of Southeast Michigan have been under heat advisories on multiple occasions this summer, including this weekend when temperatures reached into the 90s with the heat index approaching 100 degrees, thanks to the high humidity.

The National Weather Service in Detroit says the heat index will peak in the upper 90s on Sunday afternoon, but a cold front is expected to make its way into metro Detroit to begin the new work week Monday.

Temperatures are still expected to surpass 80 on Monday, but the low temps could range between 57-65 to begin the new week, before things really cool off Tuesday and Wednesday.

It's important in weather like this to keep a close eye on children and pets; make sure they have plenty of water and come inside for a break from the heat. It's also a good idea to check on elderly family members or neighbors, as they are more susceptible to illness and even death from excessive heat.

"The high heat and humidity can put stress on the body, making it dangerous to be outdoors for any significant amount of time," said Capt. Kevin Sweeney, deputy state director of Emergency Management and commander of EMHSD. He added: "The potential for thunderstorms and power outages this week could leave residents without air conditioning and even more susceptible to heat-related illness."
