SOUTHGATE (WWJ) - Alcohol appears to have been a factor in a fatal car crash in Southgate, police said.
The crash happened on March 16 at around 9:45 p.m. at Allen Road and Orchard Street in Southgate, according to a press release from the Southgate Police Department.
Authorities say the suspect, a 30-year-old Riverview woman, was allegedly driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Allen Road when she hit another vehicle head on.
Five people were inside the vehicle that was hit. The driver and three passengers, including a 3-year-old and a woman who was pregnant, were injured and transported to a local hospital. The 25-year-old Allen Park woman miscarried as a result of her injuries, authorities said. Other injuries include a broken clavicle and a spinal fracture.
The fourth passenger, a 44-year-old Port Huron woman, was killed.
“This was a preventable tragedy and the second serious crash in weeks in the City of Southgate resulting in serious injury or death due to drivers operating while intoxicated,” the press release said. “Our hearts go out to the victims of these crashes. Their lives will forever be changed.”
The Southgate Police Department also reminded the public not to drive while under the influence. Director of Public Safety Joseph Marsh said they would request the “maximum allowable jail time,” according to the press release.
The Riverview woman was arrested for suspicion of operating while intoxicated. She remains in custody while the Wayne County Prosecutor reviews the case and determines any charges she may face.
