Amazon announces plans for 4 more facilities in Michigan

(WWJ) -- Amazon is continuing to grow in Michigan.

The company announced on Wednesday morning its plans to open four more plants in metro Detroit and across the state.

That's in addition to the new robotics fulfillment center that launches today in Pontiac, employing more than 1,200 workers.

The new robotics facility stretches 823,000 square feet in Oakland County, and will utilize a "technologically advanced environment" to pick, pack and ship customers' orders.

Also in metro Detroit, a new Amazon delivery station will open in Canton in 2022 and is expected to have 100 employees.

Meanwhile, another fulfillment center is in the works in Delta Charter Township near Lansing, where 500 people will be working next year.

Amazon says it will also open a sort center and delivery station in 2022 and 2023, respectively, in Gaines Township near Grand Rapids.

Together, the two sites will employ hundreds of people, and will deal with "middle mile" and "last mile" deliveries, increasing efficiency for Southwest Michigan customers.

"We're excited to expand our investment throughout the state of Michigan with the addition of these new facilities," said Alicia Boler Davis, Senior Vice President of Global Customer Fulfillment for Amazon. "This expansion not only allows us to better serve our customers across the state, but also enables us to boost the local economy and drive more opportunities for job creation."

To date, Amazon employs more than 20,000 Michigan workers and has invested over $6 billion into the state.
