DETROIT (WWJ) – Two people have died after a driver lost control of his car and hit another driver and an EMS worker at a previous crash scene along I-75 in Detroit early Sunday morning.
A 38-year-old man driving the EMS rig and a 36-year-old Oak Park woman were killed in the crash, which happened along the northbound lanes of I-75 near Caniff Road around 2:15 a.m., according to Michigan State Police.
Preliminary investigation shows the private ambulance rig had stopped at the scene to check on a one-car crash. The woman was walking around the scene when the ambulance stopped, according to MSP.
As the EMS driver was helping the woman, a 58-year-old Washington Township man lost control of his vehicle, spun out and hit both the woman and the EMS driver
The Oak Park woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the EMS driver was pronounced dead at the hospital.
MSP officials say the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities have not said what may have caused the driver to spin out or if weather, drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Officials said an investigator's report will be submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
"The Move Over law saves lives." MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said. "If you see an emergency vehicle with its lights on, slow down 10 mph below the speed limit and move over. It really is that simple. Our prayers go out to both families dealing with this tragedy."
