DETROIT (WWJ) -- On Sunday, commuters crossing from Detroit to Windsor can expect to pay a new, higher fee at the tunnel.

Management for the Detroit Windsor Tunnel (DWT) has announced a one-dollar increase -- from $5.50 to $6.60 -- for cars, pickups, RVs and vans.

Officials say the rate hike is due to inflation and will help cover wage increases as well as maintenance and operations costs.

The new fees go into effect Sunday, January 15.

“Even with the increase, I am pleased that the tunnel will remain the most cost-effective way to travel between Detroit and Windsor for all vehicle classes,” said Neal Belitsky, CEO of the Detroit Windsor Tunnel.

The cost to travel from Windsor to Detroit will remain the same.
