ANN ARBOR (WWJ) – A 22-year-old Ann Arbor man could spend the rest of his life in prison after allegedly shooting another man to death over the weekend.

Sekou Conde was arraigned Tuesday on multiple felony counts, including open murder and home invasion, accused of shooting 24-year-old Donrell Canda on Sunday night. Conde is being held without bond at the Washtenaw County Jail.

Canda was walking to his home on Sandalwood Circle – near Huron Parkway and Plymouth Road – around 10:15 p.m. Sunday when he was confronted by a suspect, later identified as Conde, according to Ann Arbor police.

Conde allegedly opened fire, hitting Canda multiple times. The victim went into his home, where his 23-year-old girlfriend and 3-year-old son were inside. Authorities say Canda followed him into the home and fired more shots.

When officers showed up, the woman had run outside and she told police she was able to escape, but Canda and the toddler were still inside. Officers went inside and found Canda dead, while the child was unharmed in an upstairs bedroom.

While the suspect had already fled the scene, he was quickly identified and later arrested in a nearby parking lot.

Authorities say Conde and Canda knew each other prior to the shooting, but a motive remains unclear. The shooting is not believed to be random and there is no threat to the community, officials said Monday.

In addition to open murder and first-degree home invasion, Conde was charged with felony murder, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent and two counts of felony firearm. Open murder can be punishable by life in prison without parole.

Conde's probable cause hearing has been scheduled for June 15.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the victim's family.
